This is one of the hardest things to say.
Three little words that most people will spend their entire career avoiding:
“It’s my fault.”
Ouch.
That stings, right?
But here’s the truth most people don’t want to hear, and it’s especially true if you’re in mortgage or real estate right now.
Where you are today.
How much you earn.
The stress you feel.
The opportunities you don’t have.
They’re usually the result of your actions, not someone else’s.
Not yesterday’s actions.
Not last month’s.
The stuff you did, or didn’t do, one, three, five years ago.
That’s what built the life you’re living right now.
The Fork in the Road
Here’s where it gets real.
You’re standing at a fork in the road. Two paths. Two choices.
Option 1: Blame someone else.
The market.
Your boss.
Rates.
Leads.
Your spouse.
Your past.
Realtors who ghost you.
The economy.
The fed.
Pick your villain.

And look, I get it. It feels good in the moment. It takes the pressure off. It gives you a reason to stop trying so hard.
But here’s the problem with Option 1:
If it’s their fault… you’ve just handed them control of your future.
You’re now just floating through space.
Waiting on permission.
Waiting for rates to drop.
Waiting for leads to get better.
Waiting for someone to hand you a better hand.
That’s not a strategy. That’s a lottery ticket.
And hope isn’t a strategy.
Option 2: Say the Uncomfortable Thing
Here’s the other path.
It’s harder. It’s heavier. And most people won’t take it.
You look in the mirror and say:
“This is on me.”
And the second you say that?
You get your power back.
Because if it’s your fault, you can fix it.
You’re not waiting on anyone.
You’re not blaming anything.
You’re in the driver’s seat.
That’s the shift.
That’s the moment where everything changes.
Why This Matters in Mortgage Right Now
Let’s talk real for a second.
This industry has been through the wringer. Rates went crazy. Volume dried up. A lot of people left. And for the ones who stayed?
It got hard.
Really hard.
And I’ve watched a lot of LOs and brokers fall into the blame trap.
- “The market’s impossible.”
- “My leads suck.”
- “Realtors don’t call me back.”
- “Nobody wants to buy right now.”
Okay.
Maybe some of that’s true.
But here’s what I know for sure:
There are people in your market, right now, closing deals.
Same rates. Same inventory. Same conditions.
What’s the difference?
It’s not the market.
It’s the mindset.

The Delayed Gratification Game
Here’s something that took me way too long to learn.
Every day, you have a choice:
Do the hard things today and delay gratification.
Or…
Do the easy things today and delay the pain.
Either way, payment is coming.
You can make the calls now. Build the systems now. Have the hard conversations now.
Or you can scroll. Avoid. Hope. Wait.
But eventually, life sends the bill.
And it always comes with interest.
Struggle Is Not an Identity
Too many people today wear their struggle like a badge.
They turn excuses into an identity.
“I’m just not a morning person.”
“I’m bad at follow-up.”
“I’ve never been good at prospecting.”
Cool story.
But at the end of the day, all you really have is this:
- The actions you take
- The habits you keep
- The choices you repeat
That’s it.
You’re not stuck because of who you are.
You’re stuck because of what you do.
And that’s actually great news, because you can change what you do.
So Yeah… It’s Your Fault.
And so what?
Seriously. So what?
Let’s say it’s true. Let’s say everything you’re dealing with right now is the result of choices you made.
Now what?
Here’s the playbook:
Step 1: Figure out where you are.
No sugar-coating. No lying to yourself.
What’s your pipeline look like? What’s your income? What’s your daily activity?
Get honest. Fast.
Step 2: Own it.
Say the words out loud. Write them down if you have to.
“I’m here because of me. Not anyone else.”
That’s not a guilt trip. That’s freedom.
Step 3: Make a plan.
What needs to change? What do you need to start doing? Stop doing? Keep doing?
Use the Start / Stop / Continue framework if it helps.
Keep it simple. Keep it clear.
Step 4: Move forward.
Not next week. Not Monday. Today.
Because today is the most important day of the rest of your life.

The Bottom Line
Look: I’m not here to make you feel bad.
I’m here to tell you what I wish someone told me a long time ago.
You have more control than you think.
But only if you take responsibility.
The moment you stop blaming the market, the leads, the rates, the economy: the moment you say “this is on me”: everything shifts.
You stop waiting.
You start building.
And you get your power back.
That’s extreme ownership.
That’s what separates the people who survive this industry from the people who thrive in it.
One More Thing
If you’re reading this and you’re feeling a little uncomfortable: good.
That means it’s landing.
And if you want help making a plan to dig out, level up, or just get your poop in a group…
That’s literally what we do at The Mortgage Broker Builder.
No fluff. No theory. Just real strategies that work in the real world.
Book a call. Let’s figure out where you are and where you’re going.
Because the goal isn’t to be perfect.
The goal is to be better than you were yesterday.
And that starts with three words:
“It’s my fault.”
Now go fix it.
